SUNSHINE

Acronym: SUNSHINE
Title: Smart UrbaN ServIces for Higher eNergy Efficiency
Coordination: Fondazione Graphitech
Funding: CIP / ICT PSP, call identifier CIP-ICT-PSP-2012-6
Duration: 36 months, started Feb 1st 2013
Website: http://www.sunshineproject.eu
SUNSHINE aims to deliver innovative digital services, interoperable with existing geographic web-service infrastructures, supporting improved energy efficiency at the urban and building level. Specifically, SUNSHINE centers around delivering a smart service platform accessible from both a web-based client and an App for smartphones and tablets.

URBASOFIA is one of the 16 project partners in SUNSHINE, which is led by Fondazione Graphitech.
The SUNSHINE platform will allow:

  • Automatic large-scale assessment of building energy behaviour based on data available from public services (e.g. cadastre, planning data etc.). The information on energy performances will be used to automatically create urban-scale “ecomaps” to be used for planning activities and large-scale energy pre-certification purposes.
  • The previous assessment will be then used, together with localised weather forecasts available through interoperable web-services, to ensure optimisation of energy consumption of heating/cooling systems through automatic alerts that will be sent to the SUNSHINE App installed on the smartphone of the final users.
  • Lastly SUNSHINE will ensure interoperable control of public illumination systems based on Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) facilities remotely accessible, via interoperable standards, from a web-based client as well as an App for smartphones or tablets.
  • The SUNSHINE technology will be the result of the customisation and integration of existing software components developed by other EC-funded projects focusing on smart-city technologies, including BRISEIDE, i-SCOPE and i-Tour.

The SUNSHINE technology will be eventually piloted in the context of 9 sites across 5 countries (Italy, Austria, Croatia, Greece and Malta).
URBASOFIA is the leader of two project activities, specifically:

  • The T.5.10 Socio-economic assessment of the pilots (incl. user’s acceptance and recovery of investment), which will identify both the social and economic impact of the project during the pilot stage. On the one hand task will identify the expected economic impacts of the use of smart city technologies while on the other it will assess social factors, involved in the deployment of SUSHINE, including social constrains or poor social acceptance of the technologies. The socio-economic assessment will include the definition of guidelines and best practices in both social and economic in order to provide a valuable assessment of possible city investment in the field. The analysis will allow the consortium to better understand the negative macroeconomic consequences of unsustainable planning or policies at urban level as well as to assess the potential economic impact of the use of smart city technologies across Europe.
  • The T.6.2 Large scale dissemination and openness activities, which deliver publications targeted to generic public. This will include design and production of project flyers, brochures, newsletters, articles, papers and presentations, but also the organization and coordination of user meetings, seminars and workshops at international, national and local level. As a final event, URBASOFIA and CEIT will organize a Final Conference for the presentation of the SUNSHINE results. It will be organized at the end of the project, inviting a target audience of approximately 200 representatives including members of the most appropriate organizations and legislative bodies with guest speakers from the EC and national and European public administrations.
