Together for Energy-efficient Urban Mobility: Decreasing Carbon Intensity of Urban Transport by supporting Shift to Active Urban Mobility through rethinking street design and changing travel behaviour
CityWalk 2.0 builds on the heritage of CityWalk (2016-2019) and its main goal is to promote energy transition in the transport sector by drastically reducing energy use of urban transport.
CityWalk 2.0 builds on the heritage of CityWalk (2016-2019) and its main goal is to promote energy transition in the transport sector by drastically reducing energy use of urban transport. Urban mobility is a major contributor to both the acceleration of climate change and the energy crisis. The quickest, most efficient, and cheapest way is to shift from extremely energy-intensive (and inefficient) car-based mobility to active forms of mobility (walking, cycling), with micromobility and public transport the primary means. The project addresses mobility transformation through three interconnected areas: Street Redesign, Travel Behaviour Change and Community engagement. CityWalk 2.0 helps cities test practical solutions, from safer and more attractive public spaces and tactical street interventions to cycling initiatives, behaviour-change campaigns and community-based activities. By combining pilot actions with shared learning, evaluation and policy development, the project supports cities in moving from small-scale experimentation towards longer-term mobility transformation. The experiences and lessons generated across the partnership are translated into practical methodologies and tools that can be adapted and replicated in other cities across the Danube Region. Since the drivers of climate change are transnational and global, not limited by regional/national borders, widespread and strong international cooperation is needed. Thus, CityWalk 2.0 will identify specific policy changes necessary to implement on local and transnational levels, and decision-makers will sign a position paper officially confirming and cementing the cooperation.
