Bringing achievement of SDGs for Balanced Positive Energy Districts
The SDG-BASED project aims to develop and deploy a rating system tailored to Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) and inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The SDG-BASED project aims to develop and deploy a rating system tailored to Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) and inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). PEDs, including Positive Energy Buildings (PEBs), are characterized by a positive energy balance within a group of buildings, achieved through the increased use of local renewable energy sources and the delivery of environmental, economic, and social benefits. Within these urban energy configurations, the traditional energy consumer shifts towards the prosumer paradigm—acting as both a producer and a consumer—and plays an active role in the future energy transition. To enable this transformation, the project is framed within a co-creation process focused on achieving a range of objectives, including co-ownership of the built infrastructure, the creation of a more affordable renewable energy-based market, and increased flexibility of buildings and building blocks that produce and share energy, by supporting local actors in achieving long-term sustainability. By addressing cross-cutting dimensions, the SDG-BASED approach is expected to harmonize the deployment of PEDs with broader initiatives related to energy communities and climate-neutral cities. The importance of alignment with existing regulations for the built environment, together with considerations related to economies of scale, climate contexts, and standardized digital solutions, contributes to a forward-looking approach. By fostering connections with a wide range of stakeholders, this collaborative and inclusive strategy ensures a comprehensive understanding of users’ needs and preferences through verification and validation, thereby enabling the development of guidelines and policy recommendations at both national and EU levels.
