TIMBERHAUS is a European research and innovation project dedicated to developing climate-smart, circular and sustainable solutions for the use of wood in the construction sector
TIMBERHAUS is rethinking how wood is used in construction by transforming underused and post consumer resources into circular, high performance solutions for a more climate responsible and resource efficient built environment.
TIMBERHAUS is a four year European innovation project running from November 2024 to October 2028. The project aims to transform the construction sector through the development of climate smart, circular and sustainable wood construction solutions. The construction industry is responsible for a significant proportion of carbon emissions, material extraction and waste generation. TIMBERHAUS addresses these challenges by promoting a more efficient and sustainable use of wood resources. The project focuses particularly on underutilised hardwood species and post consumer wood, exploring how these resources can be transformed into high performance and environmentally resilient building products. To achieve this, TIMBERHAUS brings together a diverse consortium of European partners. Their work combines the development of digital wood processing tools with the prototyping of novel timber construction materials and the demonstration of innovative building designs. The proposed solutions are demonstrated in three pilot cities: Berlin (DE), Baia Mare (RO) and Siena (IT). These cities provide different local contexts in which the project’s materials, technologies and building approaches are explored and adapted. Throughout this process, TIMBERHAUS integrates principles of circularity, resource efficiency and aesthetic design. In this way, the project supports key European initiatives such as the New European Bauhaus and promotes wood construction solutions that contribute to healthy, resilient and culturally rich urban environments. The knowledge and experience generated through the project contribute to the development of actionable blueprints, policy recommendations and roadmaps for mainstreaming sustainable wood construction across Europe. Through these activities, TIMBERHAUS aims to reduce CO₂ emissions, enhance the sustainable use of resources and promote the wider adoption of wood based construction solutions.
